Stan Pike - furniture maker What I do For over thirty years, I've experimented with the limitless design possibilities of wood furniture. During this time my work has evolved through several styles as I've discovered new ways to express myself through furniture making. During this time I've remained committed to making the finest, most visually interesting and functional handmade furniture possible.
My Philosophy of Design I believe in "clean" design without ornamentation. A simple form can take on a sophisticated look when natural elements of the wood such as grain, color or sometimes even slight imperfections are utilized. I prefer to use common woods, red oak, cherry, ash, walnut, basswood, poplar, pine and aromatic red cedar, rather than endangered species. As a rule, I only use artificial stains when absolutely necessary. I prefer natural finishes such as oil and wax, wax only or occasionally no finishes at all to achieve the desired affects. Although it's difficult and time consuming, I enjoy making dovetailed joinery by hand, since it's more visually appealing and interesting to do. It takes a great deal of patience for this kind of work but I also require patience from my clients because real quality takes time. The results are very special pieces.
